Promise I'll be kind, but...

Lady Gaga -Bad Romance from Jordan Baylor on Vimeo.

I won't stop until those shoes are mine!

People often say that Lady Gaga has nothing on Britney or Madonna... but I propose that Gaga is in a class all her own.

Everything, from the ridiculous outfits to showgirl dance moves, just makes me want to press replay. While it's clear that her videos have a lot of parallels with Britney and Madonna songs, Gaga knows how to take it to the next level and maintain that perfect balance between "She's amazing!" and "Is she a tranny?"

Maybe she'll gain a cult following in the years to come? I can almost see it if her videos continue to become more and more outrageous. But regardless of the fate of her fan base, she will always have a place in the fashion world! Once you go Gaga, you just can't go back...

Instead of Studying...

Urban outfitters blouse and shoes, DIY skirt and bike shorts, Fossil bracelet, knotted rosary from a street vendor

Charlotte Ronson’s mesh bike shorts… such a great take on athletic gear. So much so that I bought a pair of sheer tights and cut them at the ankles to make my own! They’re more wearable than the runway version, but still kind of a cool take on the normal opaque bike shorts that everyone has.

The Fossil bracelet is pretty girly, I know. I used to be obsessed with flower bracelets and I actually have two similar ones in my jewelry collection. Unfortunately nowadays, I rarely put them to use… the gathered flowers on this one are so beautiful:

In other news, I’ve made one successful e-bay purchase out of about five (ugh…), satisfied my craving for a creepy/badass necklace, and bought tons of Swarovski crystals… for what, you ask?! You will just have to wait and see!

The Ideal Combination

Photobucket

Photobucket

Topshop shirt, Second-hand vest and shoes, Express leggings

The colors are pretty washed out. I blame the fact that the sun now sets at 5... Anyway, I was going for something along the lines of:

from Little Plastic Horses
This outfit struck me as such a perfect combination of texture and color. All of the colors are neutral, yet the snake print pattern is such an amazing focal piece. What a great way to pull off a print that could very easily be considered trashy for daytime.

I bought the shoes during a much needed trip to Melrose Blvd. They're an amazing alternative to flats and flip flops! Although I've gotten comments saying they look like German girl shoes... ?

Here are some close-up photos of the jewelry:

To all of you who peruse other fashion blogs as much as I do: Does the knotted cross look familiar? I bought this for five dollars from a vendor on campus, and La Dama sells them also for a pretty reasonable price.

And speaking of edgy necklaces...

Links a la Mode: the IFB Weekly Roundup

lam1029

[ADDED IN BY ME:Independent Fashion Bloggers is a great website dedicated to providing content, networking services, and all around exposure to those fashionistas who wish to be famous on the internets. This week, I participated in their Links a la Mode challenge, where bloggers send in links to their best posts and hope they end up as one of the twenty blogs whose links are published on the website. And while I didn't win (grumble), this is the post that IFB made on their website announcing the winners whose blog posts were worthy enough to make it. Enjoy! I would have never found these blogs had I not been a part of IFB!]

Our Differences Unite Us

Edited by Fashion Pulse Daily

Coming off of Ashe Mischief's Independent Fashion Blogger's Post (Good Cop/Bad Cop: Participating in Links a la Mode), you all brought your A-game in posting the links a la mode -- which made it extra hard to edit! This week, the theme that I saw emerging throughout the posts is one of celebrating our unique diversity; each site has a different take and approach to fashion, art, beauty, media, lifestyle, music - you name it! From the dry shampoo trials at Dramatis Personae to Le Petite Cecile's observations regarding the bleached eyebrow trend, you all brought a new perspective to each topic at hand, a sign that indicates how wonderful and creative the blogosphere truly is. Get even more excited for Halloween with cmykaboom and Idiosyncratic Style costume suggestions that are sure to make you smile, along with DenimDebutante's discovery of the "zipholder". All in all, one things' for certain: we've got an amazing community of bloggers!

As expected, there was a fabulous round-up of links in the forum as well, all worthy of your eyeballs!

Let's Talk: WHOWHATWEAR

Photobucket

(Apologies for making this post more than a week after the actual event happened. Midterms came along to ruin my entire week! Okay here it is, [hopefully] everything you've wanted to know about the two ladies behind the enormously popular celebrity fashion website, whowhatwear.com.
Oh BTW It was raining outside that day so I seriously almost considered not going to the Q&A... this is why I'm in SoCal, people! I hate the rain! But last time I missed a fashion event like this, a few of my friends ended up on thecobrasnake, so I decided to be a little more motivated this time... OKAY OKAY I'll stop talking about this and get on with it...)

There was a time when celebrities and fashion weren't put together... nowadays though, the two terms seem inseparable. I can't pick up a glossy or even a newspaper without there being a section of paparazzi photos of famous people wearing famous designers. Actually, if you think about it, it's almost like a symbiotic relationship... the designers rely on celebrities, and vice versa. But I digress; the point is, any girl [or guy, although the discussion was really focused on women's style] who is looking to be stylish has had some sort of inspiration from a celebrity or famous actor. And out of this was born WHOWHATWEAR.com, a website devoted entirely to achieving a celebrity inspired style that still works for the every day woman.

I guess Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power are both geniuses... they knew what women wanted and made that into an online magazine and blog that's free and accessible to anyone. But of course, these two ladies had a lot of experience under their belts before they went out for their own website. The biggest piece of advice they could give on starting a career in the fashion industry was: INTERN! INTERN A LOT!! Both Hillary and Katherine interned at a number of magazines before landing a permanent job and moving up the ranks to editor. Also, the longer you stay at a particular publication, the more likely that publication is to hire you or at least provide a stellar letter of recommendation.

Both Hillary and Katherine come from completely different educational backgrounds, which I thought was very interesting to note. While Hillary got her Master's in Journalism at NYU, Katherine didn't even attend college as an undergrad... still, she managed to break into the fashion world through her work in dance and entertainment. Regardless of your academic background, internships are probably the most important when it comes to getting a job in the fashion industry.

In many ways, whowhatwear is like any other traditional magazine... but without the bulk and expense of printing. Since everything is online, whowhatwear.com is incredibly accessible to the rest of the world and also perfect for posting photos of celebrities and their rapidly changing lives. "We can see a photo today and put it up tomorrow," Hillary explained.

Photobucket

Okay, now on to the fun stuff... Favorite designers?!
Katherine is a huge fan of Balmain, Givenchy (who could ever forget Fall 09 Couture...) and Chanel. Her personal style showed it off too... the blazer she had on was very reminiscent of Balmain's wicked shoulder-padded masterpieces.

Hillary, on the other hand, has a decidedly more feminine look, and went with bright red lipstick and a cute, flowy silky dress. On fashion inspiration, she said... "I love Mad Men, Joan is my girl!"

Favorite blogs? Both Katherine and Hillary went with Sea of Shoes, Jak & Jil, the Sartorialist, and Garance Dore.

Any tips on staying stylish under a college budget? Trade with friends! It's a great way to get rid of stuff you're bored of, even if you don't want to completely give it up. Another great tip is to buy vintage and just learn how to modernize it. Usually, vintage pieces need a little re-working to be fantastic by themselves.

Ah, and I also took the time to purchase one of their books, which is sort of like a more condensed and basic version of what they put on the website. All in all, I had a great time at the Q&A and I'm really happy I went! Here are some more pictures...

I'll get back to outfit photos sometime next week... just gotta get through this first wave of midterms. God, I can compare college to a tsunami in so many ways now that I think about it... I hope everyone is not nearly as busy as I am!

In No Particular Order...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Rodarte tights, shoes that are very literally animal inspired, and a boyfriend blazer with the coolest geometric origami-esque patterns. Not to mention styling that makes me look twice. The little details in an outfit will have me staring at photographs for minutes at a time.

Photobucket

This photo reminds me of my ridiculous stash of eyeshadow that I never get the chance or make the effort to wear... the MAC eyeshadow lineups always tempted me with their rainbow of colors, but I realized a little too late that I would never use a shade of blue called "electric eel"... sigh.

Scans from Zink Magazine

Also, I had the opportunity to go to a discussion and book signing with the two ladies behind whowhatwear.com! I plan on making a post about it in the next couple of days so stay tuned! They had some great information to share on celebrity style and starting a career in the fashion industry! (Katherine was also wearing really kickass shoes)

Okay, now to get back to studying my ass off...
